School replace time capsule at Newmarket Hospital

The Laureate Community Academy School recently visited Newmarket Community Hospital to replace a time capsule.

My WiSH Charity, who enhance care for the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust which includes the hospital in Newmarket, discovered a time capsule from the school when they refurbished one of the courtyards.

Sue Smith, head of fundraising said “When the landscapers were digging up the old paving in the garden, they found a tin from the school dating back to 1995. We took this along to the school and with Mrs Kirkham’s help we were able to open the capsule with all the children excitedly joining in to see what ‘treasure’ had been buried.”

The charity has now refurbished a second garden to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and thought it was a great opportunity to replace the time capsule with a new one.

Sally Daniels, fundraising manager, met the children in the garden as they buried a new box of memories. She said: “The children have added lots of things into the capsule including memorabilia for the late Queen. The first capsule contained chocolate bar wrappers, so the children decided to put in the new updated wrappers for this capsule. It’s been great to be involved in such a fun project with the children and for them to be part of history at the hospital.”

Year 2 teacher, Jackie Kirkham, said: “The children really enjoyed working on the time capsule and thought very carefully about what should be included. They were very excited to think of the capsule being opened in the future.”

Sally added: “These updated gardens have been a wonderful addition to Newmarket Community Hospital and we are excited to do more in the future to help enhance the care of patients and support their amazing staff. Bringing the local school in to this project has been great fun and we hope it’s a memory the children will treasure for years to come. Maybe their children will unearth this time capsule one day.”
