Trainee nurse takes part in the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge
Trainee nurse Rhian Taylor is celebrating her fundraising challenge after scaling the Yorkshire Three Peaks along with her husband and uncle.
The trio took nine hours and 25 minutes to complete the climbs over a total distance of 24.5 miles raising a total of £1,206.25 for the My WiSH Charity.
Rhian decided to carry out the challenge with her 39-year-old husband Tim and uncle Jason Taylor, 48, as a way of helping to support the West Suffolk Hospital, in Bury St Edmunds, where she is based.
She said: “Since March 2020 and our country locking down we all faced our own challenges and obstacles. It’s been a tough year for everyone.
“Being a colleague and student nurse at West Suffolk I have gained so much respect for the hospital and all its staff over this last year.
“I’ve also gained so much respect for the general public and how generous they have been keeping staff at the hospital going.
“So I guess this is my little bit to give back. Raising money for a hospital I absolutely love, not just as a colleague but as a service user too. I literally don’t have a bad word to say about it.”
The 32-year-old mother of three, who lives in Woolpit, said the challenge was tough and added: “When I got there I found it a bit harder than I thought it would be. Thankfully my husband has got me into running as I have not been much of an athlete.
“It was dark when we started but it got a bit brighter as we started the climb. It was quite slippery underfoot but it did not rain until the very end and it was absolutely brilliant. The aim was to do it in 12 hours but we beat that.”
The trio took part in the challenge at the beginning of October and started at Pen-y-gent and climbed 2,277ft, before tackling Ingleborough (2,372ft) and finally Whernside (2,415ft).
She said she chose to raise funds for My WiSH Charity which supports the work of the hospital.
So Rhian, Tim, who is in construction work, and Jason, who lives in Hemingstone and runs a trailer businesses, travelled north towards Hawes, in the Yorkshire Dales, to don their walking boots, and climb the thee peaks.
And she said: “I know that most hospitals need the funds for everything that they do and I decided to do it because I felt like giving a bit off appreciation of the hospital during Covid and it was just a little bit of me giving something back.”
Sally Daniels, fundraising manager, said “Rhian is just amazing. To work and study with a young family is hard enough let alone adding in training for this challenge. Money raised for My WiSH Charity is used to enhance the care of patients and to support staff as they care for us. We are not here to replace the NHS but to add the extras and thanks to Rhian, Tim and Jason we can do just that.”
