Walk and bake sales raise funds for cancer ward

Pupils, staff, parents, and friends have helped to raise £400 for a hospital charity after a walk and bake sale.

The event was organised by Maggie Putt, deputy head at Riddlesworth Hall Preparatory School, with the money going to the My WiSH Charity which supports the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (WSFT), including the West Suffolk Hospital and Newmarket Hospital.

Most of the pupils at the school near Garboldisham, which includes 40 students aged from two to 12, took part in the walk through the forest in the grounds of the school which was covered in snowdrops and aconites.

They were also accompanied by adults who paid to take part in the walk with the bake sale adding to the funds.

The school raises money for Macmillan Cancer Support every year and this time the funds stayed local, supporting the Macmillan Unit at the hospital in Bury St Edmunds.

Maggie has received help from Macmillan while members of her family have been affected by cancer over the years which has prompted the school into raising money for the My WiSH Charity.

A spokeswoman at the school said the fundraising event took part in February this year and thanked everyone who participated in helping to raise the money.

She said: “We carry out the walk every year and do it to help raise money for patients having cancer treatment.”

Tanya Fifield, fundraising officer, said: “Riddleworth School may be a small school, however their fundraising spirit is huge.

“We were lucky to go over and take our charity mascot, Dr Edmund, to meet the children as part of their assembly. Explaining to the children about what we do and how their support has made a difference is so important. We can’t thank them enough for their donation”.
